A first consultation is twenty minutes and it is a real medical appointment, not a sales call and not a form-filling exercise. Knowing what it looks like makes it a great deal less daunting.
Your history
What you have tried, what happened, and what you are hoping for.
Other conditions and medicines
What decides whether any treatment is safe for you.
The awkward things
Earlier attempts, eating patterns, medicines you stopped. None of it is new to a doctor.
The decision
A plan, tests first, a referral, or a different route.
Your doctor has read your questionnaire before you join. The order follows this article; your doctor sets the pace.
Before you join
Your doctor has already read your questionnaire. That is the point of it: you should not have to repeat your history out loud while somebody types.
- A list of any medicines you currently take, including anything bought without a prescription.
- Any recent blood work or letters from another doctor, if you have them. You can upload documents to your file beforehand.
- A recent weight, and your height.
- Somewhere private with a decent connection. Headphones help.
During the appointment
The doctor will go through your history properly: what you have tried, what happened, what else is going on with your health, and what you are hoping for. Expect questions about other conditions and other medicines, because those are what determine whether any treatment is safe for you.
Say the awkward things. Previous attempts that went badly, eating patterns you are not proud of, medicines you stopped taking without telling anyone. None of it is new to a clinician, and a decision made on a partial history is a worse decision.
What you leave with
One of a few outcomes. The doctor may start a treatment plan. They may ask for blood work or more information first. They may refer you or tell you that something else needs looking at before weight is addressed. Or they may conclude that this is not the right route for you.
A treatment plan
Your doctor starts a plan and writes it into your account, in their words.
Tests first
Blood work or more information before any decision is made.
Something else first
A referral, or another issue to look at before weight.
Not this route
Your doctor concludes this is not right for you, and tells you why.
All four are legitimate outcomes.
The decision is the doctor's, and "not yet" and "not this" are legitimate answers. a.clinic does not influence it and does not author any clinical advice.
Afterwards
Whatever your doctor decides is written into your plan, in their words, and you can read it in your account whenever you like. If they set a date to review you, you will see it. Refill consultations take about five minutes, with the same doctor.
See if this is for you
The questionnaire takes under ten minutes, and a licensed doctor reviews it before you speak.
