Key takeaway
This Norwegian study asked 29,610 adults about heartburn and acid regurgitation (acid coming up into the throat or mouth) twice, about a decade apart. The more weight people lost, the more likely their reflux symptoms were to ease. A fall in BMI of more than 3.5 went with about twice the odds of losing reflux symptoms in people who used reflux treatment rarely or never. In people who used it every week, it went with about 4 times the odds.

What this study does not show
An observational study, so it shows an association, not proof that weight loss caused the change. Symptoms were self-reported, and for severe symptoms the link was clear only in people using reflux treatment every week.
Results from studies in groups of people, mostly in diet and movement programmes. They cannot be promised to any one person. This information is educational and does not replace a consultation with a doctor.
